Christians … being called “Abraham’s seed?”
Not literally, by physical descent, “Abraham’s seed.”
No, but by faith in Jesus we have become “Abraham’s seed” spiritually!
I am (as we have heard again and again), since being saved, “in Christ.”
And Christ (Jesus) is “of/in Abraham,” the son of Abraham (even though literally Virgin Born). See Matthew 1:1 here for proof … “The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, THE SON OF ABRAHAM.”
So … our Text today correctly proclaims of those who believe in Jesus as God’s Son, Jesus as Saviour: “And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.” Galatians 3:29
“Heirs” (inheritors, beneficiaries) of the promises God gave to Abraham, not always the physical promises as much as the spiritual ones!
And by “promise” (in Greek “epaggelia”) here Paul means “the Gospel,” believed by faith. The Story of Jesus’ Death and Burial and Resurrection.
I love that clause “if ye be Christ’s.”
With the Proper Noun, Title “Christ” being in the “genitive” case. That means it is “possessive!” We belong to Jesus!
Paul’s classic teaching in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 comes to mind here. “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, AND YE ARE NOT YOUR OWN? For YE ARE BOUGHT WITH A PRICE: therefore glorify God in YOUR BODY, and in YOUR SPIRIT … WHICH ARE GOD’S.”
Wow!
I AM BORN AGAIN … BECAUSE GOD SENT HIS SON JESUS INTO THE WORLD TO DIE ON THE CROSS! AND GOD CHOSE TO SEND JESUS AS A JEW! THROUGH THE STOCK OF ABRAHAM! SO DAILY (FOR ALL ETERNITY AS WELL) I AM AN “HEIR” TO ALL THOSE MULTIPLE BLESSINGS, “ABRAHAMIC” (THROUGH ISAAC, NOT ISHMAEL) IN REALITY!
Paul calls us “Abrahamic” … but only because of Jesus!”
“Saved” not by the Law of Moses … but by the same type “faith in God” Abraham possessed and exercised … focusing on the Coming Messiah, the Coming Saviour!
Galatians 3:6, a review: “Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
Amen!
Heirs according to (Gospel) Promise!
