Today’s Verse …

“As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:10

This is twice now (in a two verse span at that) the Apostle Paul has mentioned Christians “doing good.”

Remember verse 9? “Let us not be weary in well doing.” 

So here … the Holy Spirit has used both great Greek words for “good,” those being “kalos”(verse 9) and now  “agathos” (verse 10 today).

The first (“kalos”) is intrinsic good, that which dwell “within” a person. It is lovely and quiet and mild. Less active toward the outer world.

The second (“agathos”) is far more “outward” in nature. It is active and beneficial to others, always doing something for your neighbor, for example! Or a co-worker!

Wow!

Just like Paul never misses a chance (in Galatians particularly) to preach Grace as opposed to Law (as the means of salvation) … so does he diligently (and systematically) charge the Galatians converts to “do good” all the time!

Well, as “opportunity” presents itself, anyway. “As we have therefore OPPORTUNITY, let us do good …” This noun is “kairos,” meaning a “window of time.” Not just time chronologically, as in minutes and hours and days and weeks and months. But time as a short space of privilege, an as “open door” to accomplish some task! As Paul said, an “opportunity!” One that may not last for long!

“Let us do” is a single verb, “ergazomai” (the basis of our English word “energy”) and means exert yourself! Try hard, harder! Expend some effort!

Then “good” is used (“agathos” good) which means “actively excellent, upright, honorable, agreeable” things … particularly in regard to others!

Wow!

Don’t be a snob.

Don’t be ugly.

Don’t be a recluse.

Be helpful, graciously so, wherever you are!

“As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men …” 

With “men” being italicized, as you can plainly see. The word “all” (“pas” in Greek) supplies the idea of “all,” no exceptions. This would includes doing good to women and children as well!

That’s why we were told (by Paul here in Galatians) that the Fruit of the Holy Spirit includes the quality of “goodness!” (Which goodness is this? “Agathos” goodness!)

Be good to everybody!

At least as much as they will let you, as much as humanly possible! It’s like Romans 12:18, I think. “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” See what I mean? Share goodness, “do good” to those people, to them all!

Then Paul adds one caveat, one clarification … “especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” Be good to all … but particularly (especially) to your saved brothers and sisters!

“Especially,” an adverb, (spelled “malista” in Greek) means “most of all,” or at times “chiefly!”

Wow!

If one was ever forced into a situation where he could only be good to one man (instead of three men, only one of whom was born-again) he should opt for his goodness being showered on the one who was a Christian!

Loving each other (Christian to Christian) is one of our main ways of witnessing for Jesus. “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” So says John 13:35.

 

In Galatians 6:9 Paul writes: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” One of my favorites Verses in all the Bible!

Really, I can recall the day I committed this great verse to memory. I was a teenager, sixteen I believe. I was working an afternoon job, after school. In Greenville, South Carolina … and this Sentence (Galatians 6:9) I read over and over again! Until I had hidden it “in my heart!” (Running the paper cutter, trimming Gospel tracts, for a Christian Radio Ministry!)

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” What an encouragement Paul has given us here!

The verb “be weary” is “ekkakio” in Greek. It is found 6 times in the New Testament, and means “to faint” 4 of those 6 times! The other 2 times, just like here (including here in fact) … “to be weary.”

It means “to be spiritless.”

It means “to be tired out!”

The literal idea is “yielding to anything evil.”

Even “semi-evil!” (The very “appearance” of evil!)

More specifically, “to give in to anything good-for-nothing.”

Wow!

Then the substantive “well doing” must be studied.

“Kalos” is the adjective now. (Doing is merely “poieo,” any “activity” diligently pursued.) Whereas “kalos” means “well/good” in this sense: “lovely, excellent!” Even “choice, surpassing, excellent!”

“Kalos” is as helpful, gracious … every bit as much as “kakos” is harmful, ugly!

Do not slip into lethargy, complaint (or anything else that will hurt your spiritual progress) … rather, pursue (chase after) the doing of good things, lovely things, profitable things! That is what Paul is saying!

Then comes the promise … “for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

See the nexus , the linkage, between the last verse’s (yesterday’s lesson) sowing/reaping … and this verse’s (today’s lesson) reaping of good things … if we do not quit? Or (not) fall into some “good-for-nothing” situation.

Wow!

Now the verb “faint” (at the end of the verse) is “ekluo,” basically meaning “to fall apart!” Literally “to come loose!” To give up, to ease off, to retire (in a lazy sense)!

And then I am thinking “in due season” (“kairos”) … well, that is up to the Lord, the “Lord of the harvest” (as Luke 10:2 calls Him)! “Kairos” specifically means “at just the right moment, the right ‘window of opportunity,’ in God’s perfect time!”

What a verse!

What a help!

What an exhortation!

Galatians 6:9 … “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

Now, everybody, this being Election Day in America (lesson written Tuesday morning, November 6, 2018) … let’s practice Galatians 6:9 … AND GO VOTE! Even if it means standing in line! (Do not be weary in well-doing!)

We voted early and had to do just that … a slow moving line as well … for over an hour and a half!

God bless America!

May God today stop (or at least slow it down) the advance of evil … and strengthen the cause of godliness in our Land!

 

“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” Galatians 6:7-8

The beginning of Paul’s Maxim (a short, pithy statement expressing a general truth or rule of conduct) here is almost a warning: “Be not deceived.” The Greek verb “deceived”is “planao,” meaning “to stray, to wander, to roam” heedlessly. (Our word “planet” comes from it, from “planao.” Something “wandering around in outer space,” amidst all that darkness!)

This Proverb is in a paragraph (of Galatians 6) which cautions again and again about being “overtaken” (synonymous with being “deceived”) by sin! Verse 1 … “Brethren, if a man BE OVERTAKEN in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness.” Or again in verse 3 … “For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he DECEIVETH HIMSELF.”

Wow!

No wonder our Text today begins with such a strong imperative, a stark command … “Be not deceived.” (I once taught a Bible Class, a series of them really, on “The Commands of the Apostle Paul,” almost too many to count in his 14 Epistles!)

“Mocked” is an interesting verb indeed! Spelled “mukterizo” (used only here in all the New Testament) the word means “turning up one’s nose (one’s ‘snout’ literally)” at someone, here at Almighty God! The root of “mukterizo” is “muzo,” meaning “to moo” like a cow! Yes, that’s mockery! The height of disrespect!

Wow!

Then comes the “common sense” law instituted by our Lord Creation Week! “Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

The verb “sow” (in Greek “speiro”) means “to scatter.” As in broadcasting seed all over a plowed field. The verb “reap” (“therizo”) comes from a noun meaning “summer!” Then (even further back into its etymology) from a root verb meaning “to heat, to warm” something. (Exactly what must happen to “seed” before they can germinate!)

Has this law ever been violated? 

Now, Paul illustrates.

From two extremes!

The flesh and the Spirit!

“For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption,” shall reap “decay, rot, putrefaction!” Not a good thing!

But … “He that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” This is the Holy Spirit of God, Who is the Bestower of real Life, eternal Life, Life abundant!

Paul has been talking about the flesh/Spirit conflict now for two chapters, two Galatian chapters! Here his argument comes to a logical (Holy Spirit inspired) Conclusion!

Dear reader, Bible student following this Lesson today … the choice is yours!

What are you sowing day by day?

I once heard of a young smart aleck who boasted: “I am going to sow my wild oats and pray for crop failure!” A word of warning: that is NOT going to happen!

“God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”

 

We are definitely now in the “practical” portion of Galatians. And the writer (humanly speaking) clearly is the Apostle Paul, his syntax and theology here being so obvious!

“Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.” Galatians 6:6, what a verse!

May I paraphrase it?

The one (the Christian) who is taught the marvelous things of God’s Word … should share (communicate), should give … should support … him who has taught him all those good things!

In others words .. the Pastor who “feeds” you the Word of God week after week … should be given a good remuneration (including salary or benefits) for his diligent labor! 

Elsewhere Paul even says give him “double pay!”

In 1 Timothy 5:17 … “Let the elders (Pastors) that rule (lead) well be counted worthy of DOUBLE honour (‘price,’ and used this way 8 times in the New Testament, and ‘sum” 1 time), especially they who labour in the Word (the Scriptures) and doctrine (teaching).”

Our verse again: “Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.”

The verb “is taught” gives us the English term “catechism!” It means “to verbally instruct!”

The noun “word” is “logos,” meaning the Bible!

And the verb “communicate” is “koinoneo,” meaning “to share!” (If I have ten chickens, I shall give my Preacher two or three of them.)

To what extent is this generosity to extend?

“In all good things!”

That might even include your Pastor’s insurance!

Or seeing if he has enough good books to read and study. Aiding his becoming an even better student of Scripture himself!

Or if he can go on vacation in the summertime.

I don’t know … but “all good things” sure sounds pretty vast!

In Galatians 6:2 Paul wrote: “Bear ye one another’s burdens.”

But then, three verses later, he preached: “For every man shall bear his own burden.” Galatians 6:5, our Bible Text for today.

Is this a contradiction?

No!

In the earlier verse the noun for “burdens” is “baros,” meaning a very, very heavy load! One too much for a man to carry by himself! (Then, let’s go HELP him.)

Whereas in today’s Verse the word for “burden” is “phortion,” just meaning a “load” that is manageable. Not requiring extra assistance!

Wow!

Problem solved!

Now … here is a case where (to my thinking anyway) grammar and vocabulary greatly aid proper Biblical interpretation!

We help others, when need be.

Otherwise we mind our own business … and live for Jesus, bearing the little “vicissitudes” (burdens) of life. (The word means the little “turns” life takes from time to time, often emphasizing the “unpleasant turns” we all face.)

What a truth!

Part of Christian maturity is developing “hupomone,” the Christian grace of endurance, or patience. The word literally means “staying under a load,” and doing so without complaining or doubting or questioning Almighty God!

Of course Peter did give the Christian additional hope with this verse, this possibility, this challenge: “Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

Amen!
