The Bible is clear.
“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.” Exodus 20:12, where the verb “honour” actually means “to let them (one’s parents) have great WEIGHT in one’s life!” Listen to them. Obey them. Hold them in high regard!
Later Paul, reiterating this Command, calls it … “the first commandment with promise!” Read it please … “Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.” Ephesians 6:2-3
But my main interest today is JESUS … and His Relationship to Mary and Joseph. What kind of Son was our Saviour, in His Humanity?
Again, the Bible leaves no doubt.
Jesus was only 12 years of age when this Event occurred. Mary and Joseph have just returned to the Temple to find Him, having inexplicably lost Him for several days! “And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.” Luke 2:48
Then immediately in verse 51 we are told: “And he (Jesus) went down with them (Mary and Joseph), and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them.” Where the verb “was subject” means He “lived UNDER their authority.”
Wow!
And even late in His earthly Life (but do remember Jesus is coming again) our Lord highly honored His Mother, from the Cross even! (Likely by then Joseph was dead.)
From Calvary’s Beams … Jesus asked John (the Disciple, the Apostle) to care for His mother the rest of her life! Here’s the interchange: “Now there stood by the cross of Jesus HIS MOTHER, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw HIS MOTHER, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved (John), he saith unto HIS MOTHER, Woman, BEHOLD THY SON! 27 Then saith he to the disciple (still John), BEHOLD THY MOTHER! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.” John 19:25-27
Wow, what respect!
I am simply showing you that Jesus (from an early age to His very death) obeyed the Command about honoring His Parents! (Though do remember, Jesus literally is the Son of God, Virgin Born!)
So surely … we have the same obligation yet today.
By the way, I see no age limitation on that Command. All one’s life he or she (son or daughter) should obey it to the fullest!
And if Mom and/or Dad are dead?
Honor their memory, their legacy, their character!
Hold them in dear, sweet memory!
In so doing, you will automatically (by example) teach your children to do the same!

Jesus was loved by those around Him, including Mary and Joseph … “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.” Luke 2:52
