Our Text this morning is Psalm 72. Its “heading” (or “superscript”) is written: “A Psalm for Solomon.” At least it’s this way in our King James Version of the Bible.
One might call it (the Psalm) an instruction “manual” written by a royal father to his heir, his son. (It is that, indeed. Penned by David the King for Solomon his son!) But Psalm 72 is more than that … it also includes predictions for the future!
And it is, in my estimation anyway, broader in scope than just a human king, no matter how good a man he might be.
Let me show you what I mean …
Verses 6-8 … “He (the King) shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth. In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth. He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.”
Solomon, humanly speaking, did not “come down.” He was born of David and Bathsheba!
Not in all his days did Solomon allow “righteousness to flourish.” He clearly backslid from God in his later years.
And though he was a man who fought no wars, his “reign of peace” was not eternal! Only 40 years, to be exact.
And King Solomon never literally reigned “from sea to sea, from the river to the ends of the earth!”
So, knowing that the Psalm 72 Title is correct, it being divinely inspired, “A Psalm for Solomon,” Whom Else might the Psalm be describing? What other (presumably Jewish) King might this be?
I have an idea!
JESUS!
KING JESUS!
But certainly not in His First Coming, when He died on Calvary to save us from our sins.
KING JESUS, in His glorious Second Coming! During His 1,000 Year Reign on earth, the Millennium!
HE will “come down” to rule!
Refreshingly so, “like rain upon the mown grass and showers that water the earth.”
During His Administration “righteousness will flourish!” And “peace as long as the moon endureth!”
And He unquestionably “have dominion from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.” Worldwide, in other words!
Yes, Psalm 72 is Millennial Scripture for sure.
Now, watch verses 10 and 11, classic Old Testament Prophecy. Lines that have both a local fulfillment and then a longer range fulfillment: “The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts (SOLOMON). Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him (JESUS).”
Wow!
And the Psalm ends describing One far beyond Solomon. “His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed. Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.” Verses 17-19
King Jesus!
During the Millennium, as a harbinger of all eternity!
Hallelujah!
