Most any Bible student is aware that Jesus’ favorite Word for the Holy Spirit was “COMFORTER.” At least four times our Lord employs this Title for the Third Person of the Godhead.
Those being John 14:16 and John 14:26. Followed by John 15:26 then John 16:27.
The Noun is “parakletos” in Greek. It means One Who is called (“kaleo”) alongside (“para”) to help and encourage and strengthen and even caution a fellow traveler!
Except the Holy Spirit is not only “beside” us, but “indwelling” us! Paul taught us that in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 … “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is IN you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
Then as I grow in the Grace of God I learn that Jesus too is my “Parakletos!” In English we often use the word Paraclete. Our King James Bible translates the word differently when referring to Jesus though.
Let me show you. “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an ADVOCATE with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” 1 John 2:1, where “advocate” is our Greek noun “parakletos!”
The Holy Spirit is our Comforter!
Jesus is our Comforter!
And now I learn that God the Father is my Comforter as well! “Blessed be GOD, EVEN THE FATHER of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the GOD OF ALL COMFORT; Who COMFORTETH US in all our tribulation.” 2 Corinthians 1:3
Now you can better understand the Lesson Title today!
THE TRINUE COMFORTER!
FATHER, SON AND HOLY SPIRIT!
We Christians are then “thrice comforted!”
How very blessed!
