It’s a sad chapter in David’s life.
Yet initially it seems to be so innocent!
In 2 Samuel 11:1 the historian informs us … “And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel …”
David the King dispatched his army to battle … and then he did not accompany them? Let the able commander Joab handle it!
So David stayed home!
Such unlike-David behavior!
Stayed home and slept?
Truthfully the man sounds bored here, “at ease” while his men are facing danger on the field of combat! “And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house …”
Looks like he slept all day!
Definitely, wrong place!
Sleep is not a sin, but sleeping all day when one’s obligations lie elsewhere … now that’s another matter. No mention of David being sick here, just sleepy!
Then it happened. The “wrong time” part of our Lesson.
One “eveningtide, David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.” 2 Samuel 11:2
Most everybody knows the “rest of the story” now.
Bathsheba!
Adultery!
Diminished lives!
Murder, bloodshed, heartache!
All because King David (now probably in his 40’s) did not suit up in his armour when it was time to fight!
Wrong place at the wrong time!
Is anyone reading here today who should be … not sleeping … but clothed in the “whole armour” of God?
On the battlefield for Jesus?
Wake up!
Before you too “slip” as did David, one of the most godly men in all Scripture.
Enough said.
