THE BOOK OF JOSHUA, CHAPTER 12, VERSES 1-24

October 25, 2017 by Dr. Mike Bagwell

Joshua chapter 12 is the mid-point of the Book. Yes, it contains 24 chapters.

And it, chapter 12,  is pure history!

The scoffers would wrongly say, “pure legend!”

It’s almost as if Joshua kept a daily “journal!”

Each battle, just as well say, each victory is precisely recorded.

Or at least listed!

As in verse 1: “Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river Arnon unto mount Hermon, and all the plain on the east …” Then follow two well-known names, Sihon and Og. (“Sihon” means “warrior! And “Og” means “long necked,” with lots of vanity and pride to accompany it, one supposes!)

Verse 7 continues: “And these are the kings of the country which Joshua and the children of Israel smote on this side Jordan on the west, from Baalgad in the valley of Lebanon even unto the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir; which Joshua gave unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions …” And here are dozens of names, all triumphs for Israel!

Wow!

But what’s the point of all this?

Partly to prove the historical and geographical accuracy of the Bible, perhaps.

But undoubtedly, to teach us a lesson!

That being?

When God sends you a victory … record it!

Write it down somewhere!

Make a list!

And leave such a book (maybe books) for your children and grandchildren too, after you die and go to Heaven!

Your personal testimony … that God keeps His Word!

A documented validation of God being real in your life!

Paul must have done this, once cataloging the many deliverances God had sent his way! “Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.  Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily …” 2 Corinthians 11:24-28

My list may not be as dramatic, but it can be every bit as personal, sincere, genuine!

Lesson over!

Go buy a notebook, then get busy recording, writing, listing!

And I promise, you’ll end up praising too!

— Dr. Mike Bagwell

By the way, once your list is underway … anytime you get discouraged … go read that thing yourself! It will uplift you! Considering God’s “works” in your life! God’s Faithfulness!

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA, CHAPTER 11, VERSE 23

October 24, 2017 by Dr. Mike Bagwell

We’ve finally arrived at the last verse of Joshua chapter 11. Five Lessons from that “pericope” of Scripture, but critically important to understanding the history of ancient Israel.

And verse 23 is a summary statement, for sure. Almost a biography! One of the most astounding lives ever lived, in fact. (Of course Joshua is a “picture, symbol, type” of Jesus in many ways!)

“So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.” Joshua 11:23

Remember, the name Joshua means “Jehovah is salvation!” Or as I sometimes quip, “Jesus saves!”

The verb “took” is “laqach” in Hebrew, “seized, captured, laid hold of, acquired.”

But strangely, “laqach” here is written as an “imperfect” verb, in its sense of timing! (Simply a point of grammar. This does NOT mean there is anything WRONG with the verb!)

“Imperfect,” meaning what then? Just that Joshua indeed “captured” the land, “exterminated” (this action now completed, in the past) the heathen … but having done so … he remains prepared to “fight” any other enemy that might appear or reappear!

How wise!

Then comes the expression, the phrase, “the whole land!” Written “kol eretzs” in Hebrew. The implication is that no wicked conclave still existed, We’d say “border to border, coast to coast!” The whole Land now Israel’s!

Wow!

What obedience!

Joshua did “according to all that the Lord had said to Moses!”

Unlike so many other leaders Israel had through Bible times!

Now, the Land can be subdivided to the respective Tribes of Israel!

Home, finally!

In the Promised Land .. because of a man’s obedience!

Amazing!

I too will some day be “HOME” … because of a Man’s perfect Obedience!

In Heaven … and because of JESUS!

Praise His Name!

— Dr. Mike Bagwell

Oh, that last line, to be repeated numerous times in the Book of Joshua. “And the land rested from war.” Now Joshua is a peace-maker, rest-bringer! Like Jesus … Matthew 11:28 … “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Wow!

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA, CHAPTER 11, VERSE 20

October 23, 2017 by Dr. Mike Bagwell

This may be the “toughest” verse in the chapter, Joshua 11:20.

I’ll couple it with the preceding verse to give it some context. “There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle. For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle, that he might destroy them utterly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.”

The Lord hardening hearts?

The Lord showing no favour?

The Lord destroying people?

Yes, this is Joshua 11:20, King James Version, the Word of God! (Actually, just about any so-called “version” says essentially the same thing here!)

To “harden” a heart means allowing it to become “stubborn, strong, courageous!”

God here was in reality making more enemies for Israel, for her army! (Turning people against her, am I right?) Then … very same God would fight for Israel, demolishing those very enemies via His Power!

Wow!

But one can see (after careful thought, and  prayer) that this was no rash move on God’s part. These “enemies,” Canaanites by culture, were WICKED to the extreme. And had been growing progressively more vile with each passing year! For over four centuries!

God was “gracious” to them that long, four hundred years of longsuffering!

Plus this … the sin those people practiced with such abandon … that alone hardens one’s heart! Desensitizes one to the good things of God! 1 Timothy 4:3 … “Speaking lies in hypocrisy (among other sins); having their conscience seared with a hot iron.” No longer able to discern right and wrong!

This too, Israel “needed” some enemies, to keep her strong for battle! And when these heathen people (with no provocation from the Jews whatsoever) rose up against her … she responded appropriately! Thereby benefitting from her “foes!” (Oh, the Wisdom of God!)

So … all God is really doing in this verse is “making all things work together for good” for His people! It’s an illustration in the Old Testament of Romans 8:28, so boldly stated in the New Testament!

Let’s not blame God for something He promised long ago. To judge the wicked!

Let’s just praise Him that He still makes no mistakes!

Psalm 36:6 says it well. “Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; THY JUDGMENTS ARE A GREAT DEEP: O LORD, thou preservest man and beast.”

Amen.

I sit here at a computer keyboard (in a motel room) … amazed!

OOPS!

October 21, 2017 by Dr. Mike Bagwell

I have slept late!

A rarity, indeed.

And today we must drive (have the privilege of driving, really) to  the South Carolina Coast (Conway area) to preach a Revival Meeting.

For those reasons …

A Lesson today is impossible!

Maybe later this evening, after we arrive.

I hope ya’ll understand.

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA, CHAPTER 11, VERSE 18

October 20, 2017 by Dr. Mike Bagwell

Here’s today’s verse … “Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.” Joshua 11:18

Talk about an ocean in a thimble!

This one line Sentence of Scripture says a lot!

(I heard a scientist, an astronomer, this week tell of a now observable, imploding star … called a supernova … where a single spoonful of matter might weigh a thousand tons! I feel that way about Joshua 11:18, our Text this morning!)

“Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.”

Including the leaders of Jericho, Ai, then that whole “southern” half of the Land of Canaan … and next that militant swing “northward” which followed! One nation, one city-state falling after another! Tribe after tribe … defeated!

“Joshua made war A LONG TIME with all those kings.”

And I am wondering, “How long?”

I consulted my Bibles, my study Bibles.

Several say at least seven years from the beginning of the conquest until Hebron fell … based on the life of Caleb, his chronology! (Comparing Joshua 14:7 with Deuteronomy 2:14 and doing the math!)

That’s a long time to be at war!

Especially for a young, relatively small Nation like Israel!

Another Bible Teacher observed that one can easily read of the Conquest of Canaan in a single sitting, every battle! A “quick” read, indeed!

But, in reality … it took seven long years (meaning seven Passovers, seven Pentecosts, seven Tabernacles) to wage these numerous battles!

A lesson on “time” today?

Time spend in battle!

This all set me to thinking, on a spiritual plane, how much time do we spend “at war” with the enemy?

“In battle” against the world, the flesh and the devil?

I’d say, “Seven years!”

No, I’d say, “Longer than that!”

Truthfully, “as long as we live in these physical bodies” of ours, on this earth prior to the Lord’s Second Coming … we will face (spiritually) battle after battle after battle!

It is an ongoing contest!

Paul’s verb “wrestle” in Ephesians 6:12 is most fully expressed by a present tense verb … an ongoing wrestling match! Not ending anytime soon! “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” Wow!

No wonder Paul felt, testified … “I die daily!” (1 Corinthians 15:31)

Us, as Christians, in battle?

Listen to Jesus … Who constantly battled evil … “The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.” If our dear Lord fought … we must as well, Matthew 10:24.

An elongated war!

Paul, in 1 Timothy 1:18, exhorted young Timothy to “War a good warfare!”

Lifelong … until we reach that City, the City of Peace!

— Dr. Mike Bagwell

Be a victor today, “in” Christ Jesus our Lord!
